Computer Basics Summary:

Are distractions, focus and pacing issues sabotaging your training? Learn how to hold an adult learners attention and make information stick. Workshop participants will learn how to create and deliver effective, dynamic presentations to diverse audiences. Each session will improve the presenter’s competence and confidence by sharing proven techniques that produce memorable workshops and trainings.

What you will learn:

Session One:  The Portrait of the Adult Learner (October 11 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern)
After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the stages of adult learning.
  • Utilize strategies that engage adult learners.
  • Establish positive rapport with participants.

Session Two:  Competent and Confident Presentations (November 8 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern)
After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze the needs of the audience.
  • Develop credibility.
  • Organize information in a concise manner.
  • Employ creative attention-getting devices.
  • Utilize the personal narrative as support material.
  • Apply effective vocalic and nonverbal delivery techniques.

Session Three:  Perfecting Your Workshop (December 6 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern)
After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct professional Question and Answer Periods.
  • Utilize various teaching methods to meet audience needs.
  • Deal effectively with difficult participants.

About the Facilitators:
Alan H. Shiller has been teaching communication and education courses at the college and university level for more than 35 years.  Currently he is a professor of speech communication at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.


Shiller received his undergraduate degree from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts and his graduate degree from Purdue University in Indiana.  His first college teaching position was at the University of Georgia where in 1980 he was named one of the Top Professors of the Year.  In 2002 he was honored as the Outstanding Professor of the Year at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. His students agree he has the “knack” of breathing new life into standard information.


He is widely sought after as a workshop and keynote speaker, as his programs are informative and pragmatic, but entertaining as well.  Recent seminars include National Education Association, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, Illinois Education Association, Children’s Home and Aid Society, and the Child Day Care Association.
